Q47/V40 and a 700 GMAT

Question

Hi guys!

I just took the GMAT a few days ago and scored Q47 and V40. These are exactly the same scores as in one of my official GMAT Prep Practice Tests a few days ago.

In the Prep Test and in all available score tables online this leads to a 710 score. In the official GMAT I got, however, only a 700.

Does anyone here have an explanation for this? Is it common that the same Quant&Verbal scores yield different overall scores?

It's possible for two people to get the same section scores but different total scores.

Hi Testtaker010323.

You GMAT total score isn't based on your section scores. It's based on your performance on the questions themselves, and a range of performances can produce the same section scores.

As a result, the same section scores can be associated with multiple different total scores. For example, as you have discovered, Q47/V40 can be associated with 710 or 700, and I'm pretty sure, 720 as well.

Congratulations on an excellent score. The score generally gets calculated on the difficulty level of correctly/wrongly answered questions.

Hi Testtaker010323,

1. The GMAT generates a score at the end of both the quantitative and verbal sections. These scores are on a continuous scale.
2. These scores are mapped onto an internal scale. Let's call these scores "internal scores".
3. These internal scores are combined to arrive at a total (internal) score.
4. All these scores are then converted to the scale scores that are exposed to the test taker (6 to 51 for quant and verbal, and 200-800 for the total).

The internal scales are slightly more accurate than the ones exposed to test takers, and that's why we see different total scores for the same score combinations.
