Hi tjogallagher,

It was mentioned in one of the recent GMAT Club Youtube videos that the standard deviation of GMAT FE is around 25-30 points. Any standardized test is kind of a psychometric measurement, so it's normal that there is inherent variability in the results even if your underlying performance stays the same.

It seems to me that your mock scores are on a upward trend within a reasonable range of fluctuation. Don't worry. Below is the Youtube video I mentioned, which might be useful in interpreting your mock test results:

Hello everyone,

25M trying to apply to M7 this fall. I thought I was improving, but I had a score dip in a practice test and it's really rattling me. I'm getting frustrated because to the extent that this is supposed to reliably assess you, why would the score fluctuate so much?!?!

My exam is March 24, here are my recent scores:
1. OG mock #1 (November 10, 2024): 625 (Q80/V82/DI81)
2. OG mock #2 (December 8, 2024): 685(Q83/V85/DI84)
3. OG mock #1 reset (December 15, 2024): 665(Q84/V85/DI80)
4. OG mock #3 (December 15, 2024): 635 (Q78/V83/DI83)
5. OFFIFICAL ATTEMPT #1 (December 20, 2024): 665 (Q82/V85/DI82)
----- began seeing a tutor -----
6. OG mock #2 reset (February 23, 2025): 695 (Q86/V86/DI81)
7. OG mock #3 reset (March 2, 2025): 695 (Q85/V85/DI83)
8. OG mock #4 (today): 655 (Q85/V83/DI79)

My question is: I didn't see any repeats on the resets, but I'm still rattled that the lower score is on the first test that isn't a reset. Are the resets easier? Like are there only easier questions left in the questions bank for the resets? And if not, should I take this as a grain of salt or is this cause for concern? How much do scores in the mocks typically fluctuate?

First, score fluctuations are very normal during the practice test phase of your prep, so do not worry about those. They happen to everyone.

Second, I can understand why you would be concerned; however, you are having a common reaction to your progress, which is not allowing yourself to accept that you are improving! So, honestly, take these as wins, but also understand that the job is not done, and keep pushing hard until your GMAT. Feel free to also keep us updated.

Each section of the GMAT is trying to use a few questions to accurately assess your capabilities in quant, verbal and DI respectively. Each practice (or actual) GMAT test you attempt will have a different mix of conceptual and reasoning challenges out of the large pool of options that the test algorithm has to choose from.

The 'devil's in the details' -- you need to look for patterns in your section performance to see if one test showed conceptual gaps or problems with specific test taking skills. It's easier with help from a performance focused GMAT coach but you can also make a good attempt at it yourself.

Your score performance will begin to level out when you've got a more complete foundations of concepts and test taking skills.
