any tips on quant when it comes to "working backward and estimation techniques"
Hi
MAN11,
Backsolving is a great strategy if that's what you mean. It works only in Quant and only on certain questions.
It definitely takes time to get a sense of when it works and when it is not effective.
It works best with algebra questions but word problems and others work too. It takes practice and often I realize only after solving that I could have used backsolving. Here are some candidates for it:
Types of Math Topics that work well:
- Word problems (work, distance/rate/time)
- Number properties
- Arithmetic (percentages, ratios, fractions)
- Algebra (especially with a single variable)
Examples of good question candidates:- What is the value of x if ... ?
- How many workers are needed to complete the job in ...?
- How many integers satisfy the condition ...?
- What is the smallest possible value of ...?
