I often hear this from students:
"I was doing fine in my official mocks — 675, 695, 705. But on test day, I ended up in the 500s. How is that possible?"
"If only the timer wasn't there I WOULD get it all right"
"I was doing well but I came across a question that seemed easy and then I couldn't focus losing to the algorithm"!
Here’s what I would tell them,

Here’s what I would tell them,
- Biology steps in. When you treat the GMAT as a make-or-break moment, your brain flips into survival mode. Fight-or-flight kicks in and the blood moves to your muscles, not your reasoning. That’s why you misread, skip steps, or make basic errors.
- Working memory gets hijacked. Anxiety clogs up the space that’s supposed to be solving problems. Instead of logic, it’s worry looping in your head.
- The clock becomes louder than the question. The timer feels bigger than the problem. The more you stare at it, the less you can actually solve.
- The “this decides my future” story. Even though you can retake, the emotional weight of finality crushes performance before the test even begins.
