Hey, guys. I'm new to the forum. I just found this site a week ago, but man, do I wish I had found it early, as I am scheduled to take my exam next Friday (the 28th) at 11:00 AM. Oh, well.
Anyway, I've been preparing for the GMAT off-and-on since last October. I took a Veritas Prep class last fall, but did not really apply myself like I should have since I knew I didn't have to take the exam until this Spring. Also, my preparation since last Fall has been anything but consistent..some weeks I studied for 10 or so hours and other weeks I didn't study at all. In fact, I took the entire month of February off. I never set a test date--just figured that I'd take the test when I'm ready. Huge mistake!
It took me until April to realize that I just need to sign up for the test in order to make myself do it. So, I did. Since about mid-April I've been studying approx. 20+ hours per week minimum. My initial score in the Fall when I took the GMAT Prep test was 590. My last (mid-April) GMAT prep test score was 650 (37V, 42Q). I recently took a 800Score test and scored a 690 (45V, 37Q), but the verbal was so ridiculously easy that I know the score had to be inflated. On the contrary, the math seemed a bit harder. These findings seem to be consistent with what others have said about the 800score tests.
Anyway, I've been studying with the OG 12 and the Veritas Prep books as well as keeping a notebook of concepts/problems that I've been struggling with. I was feeling pretty confident about my abilities as I did the PS section of the OG 12 book fairly well--even getting many of the last questions right. However, this all changed when I got to the data sufficiency portion. These problems were significantly more difficult for me. I found myself picking the 'bait' or 'Joe Bloggs' answer fairly often, especially towards the end. I was only able to answer 104/174 of the problems correctly on my first try and the # of problems that I got wrong increased markedly towards the end. What concerns me is that I've read that the OG 12 math is not as hard as the math on the real GMAT. My goal is to score 700 on the test, and I'm worried that my performance is not indicative of this score.
Does anyone know, from experience, how strong of a command one should have over the math in the OG 12 book (in particular DS) if one wants to score in the 45+ range on the quant section? I'm curious to know how well people who scored in this range were doing on the problems in the OG 12 book prior to taking the test. Did you have relative mastery over the majority of the problems? Approx. percent correct, or whatever you could provide would be very helpful. I'm trying to gauge where I should be at in order to score in this range on the quant section. Thanks, guys.
