How bad is it ? Need your advice...

Question

I took the GMAT sometime ago and got a 640 (Q49,V28). I was not satisfied with the score and re-scheduled for a second attempt in 1st week of October.

Since then, I haven't got enough time to thoroughly brush up my skills. I am wondering , how bad is my current score for getting into a decent school (top 20 maybe), considering GMAT alone...

Also, now I am planning to do just as many practice tests as I can, can you please suggest which (Kaplan, Princeton, Knewton, GMAT Club etc.) are the best practice tests to buy or download?

You can definitely do better on the verbal part of the exam. Anyway have a look the following link. It'll help you get an idea of the scores required by various programs.

While your overall score is solid, the verbal subscore needs to improve. Your quant skills are excellent, but maybe you should practice with the GMATClub Tests to keep your edge in that category.

How did you prepare for the verbal section? Please be specific.

I used OG 12th edition, MGMAT SC Guide and Kaplan GMAT Premier 2010 but I didn't really finish OG. I believe I could have done it a lot more thoroughly. This time I am trying to just cover up OG, MGMAT SC guide and do some relevant practice tests...

Definetely re-read the Manhattan SC guide. In fact, read one more time after that. I also advise you to study the Powerscore CR Bible.

For questions, finish all three OG books and review each and every question thoroughly. Fully read all the explanations. Also be a very active participant in the verbal forums for SC and SC. After you complete all the RC questions from the OG, look into practicing with some LSAT RC questions.
