which careers are risky to list in Bschool application

Question

I was reading a thread titled Essays Entrepreneurship and few of the members pointed out that your post mba career goals should not be too risky.

So I was wondering as to how the admissions determines which career choices are risky!

For example: In the annual placement data of Tepper school, they list careers such as Project Management(0.61%),and General Management(5%) so on ...

Now does it mean if your pre-mba career is project manager, then is it seen as risky by the adcoms because post mba placement data is not so high as compared to other careers?

Another doubt is, If you state your post mba career is say product development management ( Iam not sure whether it falls under the product marketing (10%) or production management (0%), it would be helpful if someone could clarify!). Does it mean your post mba career choice is high risk?

Your career goals should be realistic. anything which does not sound realistic becomes a risk. So, if you're telling the adcoms you wish to switch careers, you need to show you've done your research about the new role you want to work in. without research on career goals, it becomes a wish-list and not a well thought-out career road map (which the adcoms are looking for)

Saying you want entrepreneurship is not inherently risky, but like any other career goals the adcom is going to probe whether a) you know what it takes to be successful in that role (eg what you need to do to actually start a business), b) you've thought of what areas you need to develop to be successful and how an MBA helps you get there, and c) based on a) and b) you have a reasonable shot at success. I think most people find saying they want to be an entrepreneur risky because they really don't know much about a) and therefore can't tell that story very well, and end up saying something vague like "I want to start my own tech company"
