I have a quick technical question regarding the essays. Aside from the actual content of the essay, what other information should be included in the Word or PDF that is uploaded? In other words, should the header include name and SSN? My guess is the application system probably puts it's own header when printed but wanted to see what others are doing.

Most schools have a specific format for that. I can only talk about HBS since that's the only one I've applied to - but they request you to just put the question on top and then the answer in TR 12 point font.

I've been printing to PDF and naming the files Essay_1.pdf, Essay_2.pdf, etc.

As far as the format, I put the question in the header and use Times New Roman 11.5 point font with 1.5 line spacing and 1" margins.

I think it really depends on the school. HBS requests you to do 12 point Times New Roman and single spacing with the question as the header. I made the margins slightly smaller so as to keep my 600 word answers to a page.

Depends on the school--I think I saw 5 different ways for the 5 schools I applied to, even though several of them used the same online application program.

Each application should give you guidelines for fonts, spacing, margins, how to upload or attach or copy/paste your essays, whether to put "Essay 1" or restate the entire prompt as a heading, whether to number your pages, etc.
