Hi,
As the title says, I am having a hard time distributing my list of schools between R1 & R2. I do have a mix of Stretch, Competitive and Safety schools but not sure which combination to go with for R1 and which one for R2.
Few doubts:
1. What if I get accepted in one my "Competitive" schools in R1 but my dream school is in R2 list? Can I delay responding to R1 acceptance until R2 results are out?
2. Considering we have less than 2 months lefts for most of R1 deadlines, what no. of schools would be practical to target for R1? ( Note, I have not started on any of the Essays yet ).
3. Have been reading past applicants stressing a lot that their essays were much better in R2, which in turn got them more no. of acceptances in R2. In that case is it a better idea to push the dream school to R2 or will there be too much competition in R2?
4. Should a stretch school (which is also a Dream school ) be put in R2 just for the reason that R1 applications will be quiet strong and since that particular school is a stretch for me, my application might not stand out?

The essays get pretty easy after you've done a bunch. Having written essays for Kellogg, Tuck, Cornell, and Columbia already, I have to say that once you get the approach down it isn't that bad. You can use same themes across most of the essays and just tailor it down. I believe if you have time to really outline your "package", you should be able to fill out at least two if not three of your applications by round 1 deadline (you may be able to do all 6). As far as allocating when to apply to each, well that really falls on to you. I would look at all the deposit deadlines of your schools and the decision date to get a feel for what schools you can play that timeline game with. If you can get a RD2 decision before your RD1 deposit is due, then you can go that route. Alternatively, if you aren't worried about losing a 1K-1.5K deposit, this isn't an issue. The only time I think that the $ is really food for thought is CBS ED @ 6K deposit in 2 weeks... better really have a solid cash flow to give that up.
If I were you, I would approach RD1 aiming at HBS or Stanford (pick 1), CBS or Wharton (Pick 1), Booth or Kellogg (Pick 1). Then in RD 2 apply to the others if you don't like the schools you get admitted to. As far as INSEAD... layer in where you feel best.

Thanks for the inputs. I'll check on the deposit deadlines of the schools and see how to align them all. 6K deposit at CBS is definitely high. Thats one reason, I am not going for ED.
Good to know you are done with your essays for 4 schools!!. Ah I got to get started soon...
