From Full-Time to EMBA - Considered a 'reapplicant' ?

Question

If an applicant applies to a full-time program and gets rejected, can they apply to the same school's EMBA that same year? Is the applicant then considered a re-applicant?

Good question, this seems to come up every year from a few different clients. Generally the rule of thumb is one program per year. Realistically there is a big part of the process where candidates should be clear why that program is the ideal fit for their development goals so applying to multiple programs in the same year would fly in the face of that even from a theoretical perspective

Unless the school recommends you for another program of theirs, if you don't get in FT, it's usually not advised to apply for an EMBA. Sometimes an applicant won't get in FT, but adcom will admit the applicant to their part-time program (without applicant applying to such program). Unless that happens, you are better off either applying to a different EMBA or waiting a year and having a reason your why your goals and program plans have changed.

I believe your question is not whether you should apply to an EMBA program, but rather, can you apply to an EMBA program after being denied to a FT program in the same year. Generally speaking, you can only apply to one program per year. The year after, if you wish to apply to the EMBA program, you would then be considered a reapplicant. Hope that answers your primary concern. I will say, however, that the points made above about your goals and the decision on which program to apply to shouldn't be taken lightly. Take some time to figure our your goals and align them to what you think you can get out of a particular MBA program.
