I am about to take my GMAT next month prior to applying in the first round of 2018 for the class of 2021. I ultimately want to go into consulting and then transition into PE and VC after several years in consulting. I am struggling with picking a concentration. Strategy seems to be the best choice for consulting but finance seems like a good VC choice. I am also struggling with what schools to apply to. I plan to remain in the south so I am considering Rice, Vanderbilt, SMU, UT Austin, Darden, and Duke. Any thoughts on a concentration choice. Anyone have any thoughts on the program quality of the schools listed above? Obviously Darden and Duke are top rate. I really like Rice and Vanderbilts sizes and location.

All nice programs for with UT, Duke, and Darden being the best fits for what you are looking to do. I would say base your choice of major off what you feel is your key development goal in b-school. I'm leaning Finance as it is a bit more concrete of a major and develops a more clear skill set but bring this decision back to its core and think through why you are applying to b-school and the skill set you wanted to pick up. Use that as your guidance for which avenue to take. Ultimately this decision will not have much of a bearing on your application, only issue would be if your development goals don't align with your major

I agree that choice of major is not going to make a dent on your application. However, it shouldn’t be divergent from the career path you want to pursue. People normally take a major which supports their short-term goal. You’ll forget most academic inputs you mop up in the program in the long term.
