I am about to take my GMAT next month prior to applying in the first round of 2018 for the class of 2021. I ultimately want to go into consulting and then transition into PE and VC after several years in consulting. I am struggling with picking a concentration. Strategy seems to be the best choice for consulting but finance seems like a good VC choice. I am also struggling with what schools to apply to. I plan to remain in the south so I am considering Rice, Vanderbilt, SMU, UT Austin, Darden, and Duke. Any thoughts on a concentration choice. Anyone have any thoughts on the program quality of the schools listed above? Obviously Darden and Duke are top rate. I really like Rice and Vanderbilts sizes and location.

As you said, Duke and Darden are ranked higher than the other schools you are considering, but rankings is not the most important thing - you should also consider other aspects that are important for you, like size and location, as well as job opportunities.
