I have a (very) low GPA from undergrad, and I'm hoping to get some feedback on my plan to pursue an MBA. Any advice/feedback at all will be greatly appreciated.
My stats:
- GPA: 2.34 in engineering from an average public university in the US
- Been out of school for ~2 years. Received one promotion and working for a Fortune 500 Defense/Space company as an engineer
My reason for the low GPA is basically I am from a rural town in the south, and also a first generation college student. The best way that I can explain it is: my view of the world during college was like being in a little bubble. Where I came from, having a college degree at all put you as a top-tier member of society, and so I didn't really have an incentive to excel. Now that I have graduated and moved on, I see that it isn't the case at all, and I feel like I've ruined my chances of getting into a reputable business school.
So say that I take a few quant classes at a local school and ace them, score a ~700 on the GMAT, and possible get one more promotion in the next few years, what are my chances of getting into a top 50 school?

Thank you for your post, and for sharing your profile. I understand the emotional distress you must be going through wanting professional success, but having a less than ideal GPA. An MBA from the top 50 schools is possible; you should be strategic in your approach and work hard.
You improve your profile and counterbalance your low GPA. Here are a few recommendations:
[*]Prepare to aim for a 720+ GMAT
[*]Don't take courses at any institution; be selective in your course selection and definitely take courses at reputable universities (and you must do well)
[*]Build a community service profile
[*]aim for that second promotion

You have definitely identified the best ways to offset your low GPA
Work along the following lines:
- Boosting your GMAT as much possible.
- Work on gaining the promotion and richer leadership experience.
- Attempt to take up a leadership role in the social-sector; Move beyond mere volunteer roles.
- Yes, relevant certifications are a good idea
