I'm applying R2 at Haas, Booth, and Kellogg.
The organization I've been most involved with for the past two years is a 501(c)3 supporting women who are traveling out of state to terminate a pregnancy. They are low-income and their state has limited access to women's reproductive health. Oftentimes they already have children, the father is long gone, they work minimum wage jobs and couldn't afford to terminate sooner until they'd saved money, or have been sexually assaulted (and sometimes, a combination of all those things.) So, this organization is a network of volunteers to host & drive the guests to their appointments while they're traveling (as often they can't afford a hotel room.)
As a volunteer, I host them in my guest room, make them food, talk to them about what they're going through and offer emotional support, and drive them to and from weekend appointments. I've also interviewed in a documentary about women's reproductive health and this organization.
My question is, should I put this in my essays/resume or not mention it at all? It's been a really moving experience for me to sit and talk with folks who are going through a hard time and to provide a warm meal, clean bed, and supportive ear, but as you may know, this topic can be politically divisive.
