Hi everybody.
I'm struggling to broach the subject of getting a letter of recommendation from my supervisor. About 2 months ago, I brought up my interest in getting an MBA for the first time. The response was "you don't need to leave to get one, just do part-time" and "I would be really disappointed to see you leave". My leadership vertical is full of credentialed industry vets (PE, LSSBB, MSIE) rather than MBA grads, so they don't have many associates looking to leave the firm for a full-time MBA.
The honest truth is that I want to go full-time to make a career switch, but given the uncertain job market and the scarcity of pre-MBA jobs in my desired field (corporate strategy), I don't want to exit the firm yet. I'm hoping to maintain my current role through the next 10-12 months as I apply and interview with schools.
I'm concerned that having this conversation might be nuclear to my rapport and potentially backfire.
I understand that everyone's situation is a little different, but I would value any and all stories on how others approached a supervisor for a recommendation. Has anyone started a
"T-12 months until I leave" timer with their boss and had a smooth experience after that? What do you suggest I do?
Anything and everything helps. Thank you!
