I suspect the reason there hasn't been much chatter on this topic is because it is really too difficult to determine relative competitiveness more than a year out. Even then, these processes are so dynamic that even within an application season it's hard to tell how things are trending.
This year was a bit of an exception because the pandemic really took off in March/April 2020, which left plenty of time for people to prepare for the upcoming 2020 - 2021 season. We can definitely speculate on trends for 2021 - 2022 (it'll probably be above-average competitive but less so than last year) but that might not be the case, especially if the economy turns around and people are back to work in a pre-pandemic sense - whatever that means.
We always give the same advice to our clients - apply when you are ready. Exogenous factors are by definition out of your control, so focus on putting forward the best application and consider a range of programs (reach, target, safety). In the worse case scenario, consider reapplying if it does not go to your liking.
