I'm inclined not to include it. Please assess the validity of my rationale. Why Not?
(1) It's relatively easy for AdComs to spot other schools' essay topics addressed in their optional (assuming, of course, you use another schools' essay as your optional)
(2) I lack major "gliches" in my application that must be explained away (i.e. low GPA, odd choice of recommenders, etc)
(3) Too much information: this will only annoy application readers already boged down and behind schedule.
On the other hand, methinks it might be a good idea for Yale b/c they only have two required essays.
Thoughts?

Feel free to write another short story on this one. I had to forward your last gem to all of my buddies around the office.

I'm inclined to add an optional essay for schools where you're limited to 2 essays. i.e. Yale and Cornell.
The reason is because I wasn't able to address other parts of my application that was outside of work. for example if you had a good extra curricular activity that you were heavily involved in and have a lot of passion for, or some kind of personal history that you think would add a more personal insight into your character it won't hurt. Just write something in the beginning that tells adcom why you are adding this essay. I think they will understand even if its an essay you might of used elsewhere.

I disagree, but of course, I can't claim to be right. I think that optional esays are there to address weaknesses/gaps in your application not to squeeze in extra pieces that you could not fit elsewhere. If AdCom wanted to read more essays they would have included an additional requred one. At least that is my impression
