Hello ksan,

Deciding whether to retake the GMAT in your current situation is challenging. Here are factors to weigh:

Target Schools: If you're aiming for prestigious institutions like Harvard Business School (HBS), Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB), or Wharton School, a 710 GMAT score is competitive. However, higher scores, like 720 or 730, could enhance your chances against applicants with superior scores.

Application Profile: Assess your overall application, considering your undergraduate GPA, work experience, extracurriculars, and essays. A strong profile in other aspects may mitigate concerns about a 710 GMAT score. Conversely, a higher GMAT score could compensate if your application has weaknesses.

Score Improvement Potential: Evaluate your confidence in improving your score upon retaking the GMAT. Realistically assess whether another attempt will yield a significant improvement, especially if you've already taken the test multiple times.

Time Commitment: Retaking the GMAT demands a substantial time commitment. If you're already feeling tired from preparation, consider whether you will invest the extra effort.

Ultimately, the decision to retake the GMAT is personal, with no definitive right or wrong answer.

Regarding submitting both EA and R2 applications, it's generally not recommended. Schools typically consider the highest score, and submitting two scores may imply a lack of confidence. If you're confident in your EA application, submit only the 710 score. If not, consider waiting until R2 to allow more time for preparation and potential retake.

We offer a limited number of complimentary profile evaluations each week. We match you with the students and alums of top B-Schools according to your background and target schools. In this call, the experts will try to dig out your USP for top B-schools and provide you with honest feedback on your profile and chances to your target schools.

Feel free to schedule a free profile evaluation call with us to discuss your profile better and give a fair evaluation of your chances of admission to top Business schools.

Hello, I got a 710 (47Q/41V) in my third attempt. Although I feel like I was prepared to get a similar score in my second attempt as well, test anxiety got the better of me that day. Nearly all my mocks (official practice tests) have been in the 710-730 range. I was always scoring 48/49 at Quant and feel like I underperformed in the real exam. However, I don't think I'll be able to increase my Verbal as I have been scoring between 39-41, and realistically there might a be a chance that I could decrease my score from 41. With R2 deadlines approaching, do you think it would make sense to retake the exam? I am targeting T15 schools. Honestly, if I got a 720, I wouldn't be considering to retake the exam, but since most of the schools I will be applying to have averages close to 730, I am not sure where 710 puts me. Additionally, some of my target schools accept EA as well, should I try my chances with the EA, or would it look bad to submit both tests? Thanks in advance for all the feedback

Hello ksan,

Apologies for the delayed response but we hope this finds you in time still.

If you are targetting the Round 2 deadlines, it would make sense for you to retake the GMAT particularly since you are targetting the T 15 schools (in the second round). Of course, while there is no detail pertaining to the rest of your profile, applying with a score hovering around the average or even exceeding it a bit would give you a much better chance.

Hope this helps.

All the best!

Hi ksan,

The retake question comes down to the WHY question. Why did your quant score fall short? What was the driving factor behind you test anxiety?

It's not just about your ESR, which tells which sections and topics you struggled with. It's more to do with your solving approach and test-taking skills specific to the GMAT.

I work with lots of people who are in the low 700's trying to hit the mid 700's range. Once we diagnose the exact gaps they have, the fix is extremely fast. I've had score jumps of 70 points from 690 to 760 in a matter of weeks.

We can setup a FREE diagnostic session that will isolate your gaps. Let me know if you're interested.
