I have numerous colleagues living all over Tokyo and they usually fork out between 200,000~300,000 yen a month ($1600~2400) for a 30m^2 studio. I simply refuse to live like that, which is primarily one of the reasons why I chose Osaka instead.

Seoul is worse. a 15 yrs old 1000 sqft condo is whooping $2M.
