I wonder how much it would cost to get a bench named.

Since you have Colby there I am assuming you are talking beyond specifically donating to B-schools.

Stanford has gotten a lot more than just that 105 from Knight.
Last year John Arrillaga gave 100M...and over the years before that probably another 50M.
90M from Jim Clark (netscape)
and 400M from the Hewletts

Brown got a 100M from Sidney Franks

Rensselaer Polytechnic got 360M anonymously

The University of the Pacifics just got 100M from Robert and Jeannette Powell.

I would think to buy the name of a school in this day you are talking 100 - 200M for a third or second tier. 250+ for a well ranked school, 500M+ for a top 10 and probably a couple billion or better for Harvard or Stanford. Sooner or later someone will do it.

i dont think stanford or harvard would ever rename their schools. harvard has 30 billion in the bank (albeit not all in the bschool), what's a few more billion going to do for them? how much money does a bschool really need? new facilities/professors arent going to cost in the billions.

i think for the most part, the top 10 are set in their names. too much to lose in brand recognition if they change their name.

That was a real steal for Ross. I'll double it if they name the school after me!

You are right! after reading all the posts, $100M seems a pocket change to change a Top10 biz school's name.

Good point about Harvard but I doubt they turn down money if it was right...its not like people would stop calling it Harvard. I think that Harvard and Stanford have enough brand recognition that it wouldnt be an issue for them. A school in the top 10 without a name attached to it would be fairly foolish to turn down 10% of their total endowment.

Harvard, Chicago, Stanford, Columbia, and Yale are the only big time B-schools left without a name attached to them. So its not like its uncommon to have a name attached to it.

How much do you think we'd all have to come up with to turn one of those schools into GMATClub School of Business? I'll throw in $100.

I'll throw in a twennier (yeah, I'm a cheapo). I think we could re-name one of the online-only schools if we gathered like 5-10 grand. Or we could set up our own online school with that kind of money.

It'd be consistent, coz G'club is online and all, but let the guys who own the brand decide whether it'd be good for them.
