One of the most common assumptions about MBA applicants, especially mid-career professionals, is that they want to change industries.
However, this isn’t always the case.
Over the last few years, many of the professionals we've advised have wanted to remain in the same industry. What they were looking to change was their role.
Recently, in one of our profile evaluation sessions, we met a marketing professional with 16 years of experience within the ed-tech and workforce development segments. Having spent much of his career building product categories from scratch and driving market expansions across both B2B and B2C businesses, he wanted ownership of not just the growth numbers, but the broader business strategy itself.
We also spoke with a professional had spent more than a decade advising boards and C-suite executives on leadership decisions. She now wanted to be the one making the decisions rather than the one advising decision-makers.
In both these cases, the MBA/EMBA became the way to elevate their careers.
This is a trend we're seeing more frequently among experienced professionals. Rather than using an MBA as a vehicle for reinventing their careers, they are using it to expand their scope and position themselves for the next stage of their careers.
Regardless of whether you hold 12, 15, or even 16 years of experience, the reality is that many leading business schools value candidates who bring depth, perspective, and know what they can extract from an MBA to advance their careers.
