Hi @ jkt_praha_brusselThe experience-eligibility question is actually the least of your worries. What matters more, and what will shape how every school on your list reads this file, is whether your career arc tells a coherent story toward your stated goals, because right now it risks reading as impressive but unfocused.
- The freelance work securing 20+ Director-General participants for an EU-funded ASEAN emissions forum is, in admissions terms, the most powerful recent credential you have. That is C-minus-one engagement at a policy level few applicants at 30 can demonstrate. It belongs front and centre, not buried after the employment gap explanation.
- On the experience gap itself: the schools you have listed are generally sophisticated enough to read a transcript and understand a Covid-interrupted degree. The additional information section exists precisely for this. What you do need to control is the sequencing of your presentation from 2020 to 2025, so it reads as a deliberate, professional chapter rather than a detour. The promotions, the USD 500k client retention, the cross-ASEAN team leads, and the tax exemption win – these are not filler years.
- Your government relations work is not a positioning problem; it is a positioning opportunity. Multilateral development banks and impact investors understand policy influence, stakeholder mapping, and government interface better than they understand McKinsey slide decks. The framing challenge is translating the lobbying mechanics into language that centres on systems change, regulatory unlocking, and sustainable finance enablement, which maps cleanly onto your stated goals.
- The school list itself deserves more scrutiny than the red flags you listed. Columbia J-Term is a two-year program with different rhythms than INSEAD or HEC, and your LPDP partial-scholarship constraint needs to be verified against each school's actual funding compatibility. One school not on your list worth considering is the Fletcher School or Sciences Po if policy-adjacent MBAs are acceptable, though for the format and funding logic you describe, INSEAD and HEC remain the most coherent anchors.
Your 720 is not the constraint. The lever that moves this application most is a sharply written goals narrative that makes Plan A and Plan B feel like two expressions of the same thesis rather than two separate hedges.

Hello, I will be applying to MBA programs for a 2027 Fall/2028 Jan intake and would appreciate a profile review. Can anyone please review my profile (which I myself perceive to be a non-traditional case) and give some suggestions on how I can maximize my chances of getting an admit?Academics: - KU Leuven (Belgium) B.Sc Business Adm. GPA 14.05/20 (70.25%), Cum Laude/Distinction
- [Ongoing] KU Leuven (Belgium) M.Sc Business Adm/Sustainability Management. Current GPA 15/20 (75%), on track to reach Magna Cum Laude/Distinction with Praise. Expected to graduate in Spring 2027
GMAT: - GMAT Classic (done in 2023), 720 V 41 Q 48 IR 8 AWA 6
- That was my 3rd attempt, 1st and 2nd attempt also in 2023, scores: 640 -> 660 (all components lower than the 3rd attempt, except Q 48 in 2nd attempt)
Professional experience:- Since Q4 2025: no FTE due to studies, but notably did 2 freelance consulting work for a ASEAN (SE Asia)-EU energy and emissions trading forum, a project funded by EU and German Government grants
- notable output: secured participation of 20+ Director-General level officials (direct reports to Ministers, so we can say equivalent C-1 suite) from 10 SE Asian countries
- 2022-Q3 2025: 3.5 years in a boutique SE Asia advisory firm focused on government relations & public affairs. Clients range from Fortune-500 companies (a NYSE-listed american chemicals company; a LSE-listed consumer goods company; family-owned European consumer goods company; Chinese large gaming company) to philantrophies (an energy-transition collective funded by, among others, Rockefeller Foundation). 2x promoted, 1.5-years on paper / 2-years effective experience becoming the project lead. Highest title is "Associate" but the actual work remind me of my Project Lead (PLs) in BCG since I directly report to my country's Director, manage daily interaction with client counterparts (Manager, VP levels), and also pitch in BD opportunities together with the Directors
- notable outputs: secured annual contract extension from Indonesia office's largest clients (USD 500k+ worth cumulatively), secured two new Fortune-500 clients, secured 20-year Corporate Income Tax (CIT) exemption for a client, successfully hired a former Director-General official to our client's advisory board, also had a project where I lead a Southeast Asia-wide project team (a team of 5 analysts across Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia)
- 2019-2021: various short-term entry-level contracts/freelancing, including as Project Support in BCG Indonesia office and a Policy Consultant for a nature conservancy non-profit
- notable output: coordinated 10+ non-profit and social ventures to provide input to Indonesia's first carbon market regulation. Regulation was later passed in Oct. 2021 (this was the project with the nature conservancy non-profit)
Extracurriculars:- Avid traveller and hiker, visited 70 countries & hiked Mt. Kilimanjaro (one of the seven summits) earlier this year. Building a small online presence through YouTube and Instagram along my travels (still very small, <10 videos, <100 YT subscribers, but at least 1,5k followers on instagram now)
- Co-founded a scholarship foundation with my friends back in Indonesia. Since 2024 we have funded annually 2 high-school graduates from far-flung islands in Indonesia to study for their undergrad. We managed to partner up with a newly-established university initiated by a former Indonesian e-commerce Unicorn co-founder. Despite my location in Belgium currently I still serve as Vice-Chairman on the Board, providing inputs to my friends who's actually doing the work on the ground (e.g. selecting the candidates, fundraising, maintaining contact/cooperation agreements with the university) since I left Indonesia last year
- Back in my first undergraduate stint (2015-2019), led a team of 20+ fellow students from 5 universities across Belgium to obtain a EU Project Grant (Erasmus+) for a diplomatic simulation conference - we obtained EUR 50,000+ funding, providing fully-funded week-long conference participation for 150+ students from 25+ countries
Background: - 30 y/o male Indonesian based in Belgium
- Lived in Europe for 6 years cumulatively (1yr High School in Czech Rep., Bachelors & now M.Sc/Masters in Belgium)
- Fluent in English, French (B2)
Perceived "Red Flags" / Things that make me doubt myself:- Paused my undergraduate degree between 2020-2025 due to Covid-19 and financial reasons, returned home to Indonesia to pursue work. Therefore in most application sites, I would need to declare that I started my Bachelor studies in 2015 and only completing it in 2026 - making it seem like I did 11 years to do undergraduate studies, even though in the transcript it will only show grades from 5 academic years (2015-2019 and 2025-2026)
- This fact above also makes me doubt how AdComs view my professional experience - I have been to a couple of MBA fair/meet-an-AdCom events around here (Brussels, Paris) and when I told them my situation they all first mention "we usually accept minimum 2 years experience after graduation". I then explained that all those years working (2020-2025) were FTE positions, including the last 2 years (2024-2025) were leadership position, then they started mentioning things along the lines of "you have a good case, you can definitely explain your situation more on additional info/essay space". But that does not sound assuring to me
- Whether my "return to school" to finish my Bachelors and grab a M.Sc along the way now (2025-2027) will be viewed negatively, as it means I have not had further leadership experience for the past year, despite the fact I also did some freelancing throughout my second time here in Belgium
Career goal:- Short-term: Plan A - break into the Young Professionals Programmes (YPP) at multilateral development banks (World Bank, EIB, ADB, AIIB); Plan B - Go into impact investment/sustainable financing/ESG in Finance. I got to connect with an alumni of my current uni doing ESG & Risk Management for BNP Paribas and thought that is a solid career path given my interests and track record. I prefer to stay in Europe (or the US if I do get to World Bank), but being in East Asia (e.g. AIIB in Beijing) is also an option
- Long-term: Assuming Plan A succeeds, in 5-10 years time return to SE Asia. Leveraging the European/American experience & network to either build my own social impact venture or join large institutions in the region (SE Asian SWFs: Temasek, GIC, Khazanah, Danantara) and lead their impact investment/ESG/sustainability arms. To note: I am only considering SE Asia to return in the long-term, not in the short-term.
Schools I am considering:- First "Batch" of Applications (November '26 deadlines): INSEAD, HEC, Oxford Said
- Second "Batch" of Applications (January '27 deadlines): LBS, Cambridge, IESE
- Third "Batch" of Application: Columbia J-Term
Why the schools above and why those deadlines:
- They are all B-Schools included under the Indonesian Government Scholarship (LPDP) and has default/options of 1-year study.
- I am specifically excluding any 2-year MBAs from my options (1.5 year may be considered)
- For the scholarship (LPDP) I am only applying for partial scholarship (full tuition), planning to cover living costs on my own. If the LPDP plan fails, open to do a mix of financing-partial smaller scholarships-own funding to pay for the tuition
- Why not R1? I will be focusing on doing my masters thesis for the next 1.5 months
- That is also why LBS-Cambridge-IESE not on first "batch" as they (especially LBS) do not have any Rounds with a Oct/Nov deadline
I would really appreciate advice on the following:- What are my chances overall with the B-Schools I'm considering?
- How would you advise me to navigate around my own perceived "red flags" in the application?
- How can I differentiate the fact that my dominant work/leadership experience is, on paper, a consulting service - but it is wildly different from your usual management consulting work? (it sounds more like the work of a lobbyist rather than a MBB/Big-4 tbh)
- Outside the 7 schools in consideration, any other schools my profile might be appropriate for? (I know it skews Europe heavily, but that is simply because of my current location + the fact most US B-Schools are 2 years which is outside my option completely)
I know this is a very detailed profile, but as you can see I have been considering an MBA since 2023 (hence why the GMAT). So once more thank you in advance everyone for any feedback!
