One of the hardest parts of an MBA application isn't explaining what you do today. It’s explaining how your past connects to what you want to do next.
A convincing career story should answer three simple questions:
1. Where have you been?
What experiences, decisions, and accomplishments have shaped your career so far?
2. Why do you need an MBA now?
What skills, exposure, or experiences are you missing that an MBA will help you develop?
3. Where are you going?
What do you want to do after your MBA, and why does that next step make sense for you?
The mistake many applicants make is treating these as three separate answers.
Your application becomes much stronger when they feel like one connected story.
For example:
“
I work in consulting. I want to move into technology after my MBA because I’m passionate about innovation.”
vs.“
My experience advising businesses exposed me to the challenges of scaling technology-led products. Working closely with clients made me realize I wanted to move from advising these decisions to making them. An MBA is the bridge I need to build the product and leadership skills required for that transition.”
The second story gives the AdComs a reason to believe the career goal.
Before submitting your MBA application, ask yourself:
If someone read only my resume and essays, would they understand why my next career move makes sense?
