My gmat score breaks down like this:

710 (95% math & 83% verbal) - I am not worried about this

awa - 4 (34%) - This is what I am worried about. How closely do the Adcom look at this score? Do I need to use the optional essay to explain this? Wouldn't my essays be sufficient enough for them to know that I do not have a writing problem?

I would like to hear what you guys think about this.

From what I have heard and read the AWA, it is not very important. Some schools don't even really care. I know a lot of people who didn't do well on it just because they didn't prepare for it. The only concern might be if someone sees that score then you write extremely well crafted essays they may think you recieved help, consultants, but even that is an extremely remote chance. I wouldn't be concerned about it at all. Personally I think writing about it in your optional essay is unneeded and would just bring more attention to it.

Most adcoms care less about the AWA unless you score ridiculously low (<4). I've even heard of a few noteworthy schools that don't even require the AWA. Seriously, your GMAT days are over. Start polishing your essays and rehearsing your interview pitch and you'll be fine.

Dont' do anything about it. I had a 4 in the AWA and got into 3 very good schools and nobody ever mentioned it (and I didn't explain it). I did have a 95% V, though, but since you have and 83%V I think you're in a very similar situation.

Do you have to take the TOEFL? If so, make sure your TOEFL essay marks are high (5+). If you don't need to take the TOEFL, don't worry at all. Just write good application essays.
