Did I do the right thing?

Question

I know there's no use crying over spilled milk and all.. but wondering whether i did the right thing.

I'm a reapplicant to one of schools and spent the last 1 year researching on the school and developing my profile. Throughout this time, I was in constant communication with a student.

To cut a long story short, the student offered to write a support note to the ad coms about my application, and I agreed to it. Nothing too pandering or such, but just a simple note saying that for the past one year, how we've been in touch and how he feels I will be a good addition to the school.

Was it right to send? Will the ad coms frown on it? Am I automatically in the reject pile? If I am, is there any recourse available? Should I send the ad coms some food?

No, seriously speaking, I know what's been done has been done. But I'm just wondering whether it would help my application in any way.

I think it wouldn't matter either ways. The adcom won't act silly by denying you just cos someone wrote a letter of support. At the same time, they won't act silly by accepting you just cos someone wrote a letter of support. 

On the other hand, if that letter of support had been written by someone who donated all the money to establish the Butler library, then the letter would have helped.

A letter would not get u admitted nor get u denied... I think adcom will like it showing how somebody else vouches for u...there is always the possibility that u paid somebody to write a letter for u...but as mneo said.. its a no mas no menos situation..ho harm is going to befall u.. and as said by u in the BW forum..grab some beers and enjoy the weekend

I'm going to take stronger stance than those prior to me. It helps. The reason is simple - a student can assess "fit" and they're telling the adcom that you are a "fit" with the culture. Don't expect it to work miracles, but its certainly a "good thing".

I agree with Rhyme here. I think its a positive. If a current student or alumni can vouch for how you would do in their program, that's definitely a plus. To me, it could be as important as a letter of recommendation. The letters come from someone they don't know, but the letter of support from an alumni or current student is someone the adcoms should know, and the school should know. I think that bodes well for you.
