Kellogg DAK II Roll Call and Logistics

Question

I might be starting a week early, but river delegated this job to me, so here it is... roll call for DAK II attendees. Let us know where you plan on staying, when you arrive, and things like that, and we'll try to find a place to have a GMATClub huddle. You can PM me if you don't feel comfortable posting it here. We might be able to rent a car together if people are flying in roughly around the same time.

For me:
- When are you getting into the Chicago Area?

Arrive SFO to ORD at 5pm Thursday
Leave ORD to SFO at 1pm Sunday

- Where will you be staying?

Hilton Garden Inn, sharing with terry12

- Will you bring your Significant Other?

Nope, therefore the sharing room comment.

- How long will you stay in Chicago area after the event?

I will leave at 1pm on Sunday. I wanted to stay a little bit longer for the housing thing, but it was either 1pm or 5:20pm (which is too late) Got to make decisions for Haas and Kellogg by 4/22 (Tuesday)

- How will you get to the event (rent a car, public transport, etc..)

Taxi to and from the airport.

- Anything else you want to mention?

Probably get into Evanston Friday morning.

Not sure yet, but will check with river's suggestions a few posts ago. Would also be interested in sharing a room to save costs. (My response is the same as Kry's)

Blast, no, she's on call every time one of these weekends rolls around.

Probably 'til Monday (hooray for Patriots Day in Massachusetts!)

Still figuring this out. I may play the role of a 16-year-old and borrow my dad's car :roll:

Since some dont have access to the site yet, and having gone through this I will give some advice and maybe a few others from DAK I will give some as well.

- When are you getting into the Chicago Area? 
Event registration is Friday 7-8, they provide pastries and that sort of stuff. Thursday night they have semi organized events at some local bars. If you dont make it Thursday night you arent missing anything but flying in early on friday might rush you. Its worth the extra $$$ for the extra night of hotel in my opinion.

- Will you bring your Significant Other? 
If you have one bring them, even if they arent moving out there. Its definitely an advantage with the house hunt since they do a whole day of visiting places and can really focus where you will want to look on Sunday and rent. If they are going to be moving out there its a great way for them to meet some people too. My wife has kept in touch with several significant others she met there (she even started a JV group on facebook for our class)

- How will you get to the event (rent a car, public transport, etc..) 
Dont rent a car, its going to cost way more than taking a taxi to rent a car for several days and for parking (the hotels will charge you to park). You wont need a car to get anywhere. Everything is walking distance, the closing ceremonies downtown they provide buses to and from the event. I heard public transport from the airports to evanston is a bad idea, takes forever and just not worth the hassle (apollo, mgoblue, or nervous might provide more info on this). If you take a cab, try to share (might make sense to post on the admit student site with flight times and airports. Make sure you take a cab from evanston not just one from the curb.

When you choose events (they give options on majors, careers and stuff like that) go to two very different things. I talked to some folks who went to discussions that were both targeted at one area that they really want to go into and wished they had done two completely different things. Going to different areas will give you a different perspective and you never know something may sound very interesting to you. I went to marketing stuff, even though I dont think thats what I will go into, it definitely was interesting to learn about...and some second years I talked to had no intention of doing marketing until they went to Kellogg and saw all the opportunities and what the jobs were really like.

good stuff river! I definitely know the benefits of going to a talk on a field you're not familiar with. I sat in the Marketing table at Anderson Days and learned a lot about what marketing is about.

Do NOT take public transport from O'Hare to Evanston... at best (with the purple express line), it takes 2 hours. At worst, 2.5-3 hours... it's painful.

I'll try to fly in Thursday afternoon/night and get a hotel there. Probably leave Sunday or Monday, haven't decided yet.

Will post flight time and hotel stuff here.

I wish I could join you guys at DAK II! However, visa arrangements & the 24 hours flight really turned me off, especially that I don't know if I can skip work during the time.

It looks as though I will be attending the "mini-Dak II" weekend for JD/MBA admits on 4/4 & 4/5. I'll report back on my experiences as this will be my first time on the Evanston campus. I'm very much looking forward to it!

I am gonna attend the GSB event the following weekend. So will be there the whole next week till the following Sunday. What do I do in Chicago all those days? Maybe take a second look at the schools when they are not in the selling mode :idea:

ujjib, if you arrive around 5pm on Thursday night, let me know, we can grab a taxi together.

Also, stay in U of Chicago's International House during the week, at 60-70 bucks a night, you can save a lot of money. Then you can hassel rhyme all week.

Going to schools during the week is probably a really good idea, you could probably get into a few more classes for topics you are interested in. As an admit they will probably be very willing to let you slide into them and students will probably be excited to take you to them.

I would suggest getting a feel for the city, it might cost a few hundred bucks more than staying somewhere cheaper but find someplace in the Loop and really get a sense for the area. You probably dont need to do it the whole time but for at least a few days it would be a good change of pace.

Kry, I will let you know of my schedule once I book my flights. But 5PM seems tough given that I need to work the whole day on Thursday. As for staying in the international house, I plan to do so for the weekend (if there are still rooms vacant), but am planning to stay in downtown with friends during the week. As river said, I should get a feel for the city...Gotta check out the pizza places and the jazz bars :-D

Kry, I had a PM going around where we had real names, what group we were in, where we were staying, if we were bringing a SO (who that was), and cell numbers for some folks. I also had a thread in the gmatclub facebook page, it made life a lot easier trying to put faces to names. I met everyone but Steel that weekend and thats pretty good since there were 230 people there.
