It's funny how the dynamics of smoking changes once you get into the real world (after college or high school) and how it changed from the 90s.

I have another co-worker who's almost ashamed to be a smoker... I used to smoke and didn't actually flaunt it in college or high school, but didn't hide it either. I can see how I would not want people to know I smoke if I still did smoke.

It's almost become taboo now to smoke with so many people trying to be green/save the earth hipsters.

It depends on your crowd...I live in LA, and smoking is still seen as a cool/rebellious thing within certain groups...even among hipsters (especially among hipsters in some cases). I never hid the fact that I smoked while in college...it never even crossed my mind. In fact, smoking on the library steps during study breaks, or chit chatting outside while having a smoke before class was more than common (nevermind all the smoking that takes place at a college party). The real world seems to frown on smoking much more so than I ever came close to experiencing in college. Sometimes I wonder if those anti-smoking campaigns had much more of an effect on the Gen-X'rs than they do on my generation. With so much other things to worry about, anti-smoking never seemed like a priority maybe? Either way, people my age seem very blase about smoking, seemingly not caring one way or the other. Maybe it's the youthful sense of invincibility? Regardless, it's bad for me, it costs too much, people hate it, I need to quit soon...ugh!

Kudos to those who want to quit .. although I would love to quit, I really have not given in a serious thought. But I am curious to hear that people would despise me even if I don't smoke in front of them !

Maybe I would try and not smoke while at school .. and reserve my smoke breaks while at home

Wanted to chip in with my experiences..I quit for 6 months in 2007. I felt so accomplished that I wanted to break the "break" and picked it up again in October,2007. After a couple of months, I realized how foolish I was in doing so. So, I again started the break and I am still going strong. I don't think I will pick it up again.
Its hard but I have come to realize that its the best thing to do.
Kudos to all the quitters and those who are trying to quit..;)

I quit the day I handed in my last app and haven't smoked in 3 months. Now, I need to make sure I don't pick it up again if I end up re-applying next year.

Ain't that the truth!!

I stopped with the night life and that made a world of a difference in my attempts to quit. As for the stink, as a smoker, it's hard to tell. But as a non smoker, you can really tell how badly someone smells right after he has a smoke.

In this day of medicating everything....I must suggest something that actually works....Chantix.

My brother smoked a pack a day for about 3 years, and another 3 all through law school. He took chantix, and hasnt had a smoke in 6 months! Im planning on starting it in a little bit here.

Best of luck to everyone. Maybe this thread can be a "quitters resource" and motivation spot?

I will quit. I don't smoke too much anyway, am a social smoker. A pack lasts me a week if not more, and I can go for weeks without a singe cig. I will quit because the cigs in the U.S. are da** expensive :-D

For those of you coming to the New York area:

https://www.nysun.com/news/new-york/cigarette-tax-hike-gold-mine-smugglers

Cigarette taxes in NY have been hiked and are now the most expensive in the country. $9 a pack. I'm glad I quit or I wouldn't have any money left for b-school.

Ahh young Helg, so naive. We were all "social smokers" at one point :) . A pack of smokes used to last me 2 weeks the first 2 years of college, then it all kind of catches up with you and next thing you know you're smoking a pack a day. My advice would be to quit while you're ahead.

haha this is always the case! Everyone starts as a social smoker, then ends up @ a pack a day. Try the pill, its about $120, so at $6 a pack, thats about 2.5 weeks of smokes.

i disagree, i've been a "social smoker" for about 5 years and i go months without a cigarette. i think the last one i had was almost a year ago. never felt compelled to smoke them by myself.

I agree with you guys because I have been a social smoker(light smoker is the correct word) for the past 10 years. Like you guys, a pack lasts a week for me. I can go without a cigaretter for a month but I must accept that is hard. Generally I need my 2-3 per day but I agree with VictoryMBA here, it is better to quit while we are still ahead of the cigarettes in the race.

That's interesting to see the comments that my little remark triggered :)
VictoryMBA, I would agree with you on one thing - quitting sooner rather than later is a good thing  I am not that young anymore, btw :?
