Anyone knows if TOEFL/IELTS is part of evaluating, or comparing applicants aginst each other?
Is there any disadvantage in using TOEFL/IELTS waiver?
From what I understand TOEFL is an "elimination" criterion whereas GMAT is a "selection" criterion.
Most schools have a strict minimum score requirement for TOEFL. Any applicant not meeting that score is eliminated. A waiver of TOEFL doesn't put you at a disadvantage because it merely means that you are competent in English or in other words, you would have satisfied the minimum score criterion for TOEFL.
GMAT on the other hand is definitely used for comparing applicants. A school will never say that the minimum GMAT requirement is 700 although the mean and median of that school might be 710+. GMAT and GPA are looked at to evaluate the intellectual ability of the candidate. TOEFL plays no role whatsoever in evaluating an applicant.
