Reapplication process?

Is anybody knowledgeable with regard to reapplication processes at various b-schools?

Let me throw this situation out there for a point of reference: Say I apply to five schools that run the spectrum of reputation/tier and get in to the lower three. If I determine that I would like to hold off on matriculation for a year to take another shot at the top schools, what is typically required of me by those schools that dinged me the first time? Do I have to do the entire application (re-write essays, re-submit transcripts, pay another app fee) a second time or is there a "supplemental" application? Also, what if I want to retain my status as an accepted applicant with the lower three schools? For those schools, do I only have to submit a new app fee and a statement or do I have to go through the whole process again with no guarantee of acceptance?

Look at me - I haven't even really started essays and I'm already working on contingency plans :oops:

Well, I know this doesn't directly answer your question, but consider this: why apply to a school that you're not willing to attend? If you wouldn't go to those lower 3 schools even if you were accepted, then I would suggest that you probably shouldn't apply there. But of course, it's up to you.

As far as retaining your "admitted student" status - very, very few schools will accept you and then let you defer for a year or two (except in extreme cases, or if you're a college senior applicant). So in most cases, you don't have a whole lot to gain by applying to one of the lower schools, getting accepted, and then not matriculating even if that is the only place you got accepted.

What is typically required?

It depends on the school.
Columbia requires one essay and one new recommendation (new applicants have three essays and two recs). UCLA has the same reapp requirements as CBS.
Stern requires Essays 1 and 2 (not the "Creative" Essay 3) as well as a new rec.
Chicago requires you to complete the same exact app as a new applicant as well as answer "how have you improved your candidacy."
I believe Wharton is the same as Chicago.

All schools will require you to pay the application fee.

Any school that accepts you will require to reapply (with no guarantee of acceptance) if you turned them down in a previous year.

I see what you're saying. However, my rationale is influenced by the fact that there appear to be significant differences in reputation and salary between top 10 schools and lower schools. If I have a chance, even if I have to wait a year, to get into a top 10 school, is it worth it? It's not that I don't want to go to the lower-tiered schools; I wouldn't bother applying if that were the case. It is that I want to maximize my potential as an MBA-holding graduate.

This is all purely hypothetical. I'm intent on applying this fall and seeing where the chips fall. I'm just curious what happens to be the typical policy on the matter.
