One of the things that made me apply to ESADE was the school's emphasis on corporate responsibility and emotionally intelligent leadership. I asked about it at the interview and they really went to town on this aspect of the MBA program. I got the offer letter shortly afterwards. Then I made a fateful decision. I decided to scout for ESADE MBA teaching materials and I turned up a case study full of smiling WalMart employees and stuff about "employee empowerment" (find it yourself by searching google for "ESADE" and "Walmart" - it is written by one Pedro Amador, a coach and teacher at the school). Now compare it with the documentary on google video "Walmart: The High Cost of Low Prices" and you will see some very different reasons for the corporation's success (slave wages, racial and sex discrimination, union busting, intimidating staff, ripping off U.S. welfare and medicare benefits, etc.). Wait a little longer and grand larceny and conspiracy will no doubt be added to the list of case actions facing the company.
Let ESADE sell its CSR line to someone silly or desperate enough to swallow it. I will be taking up one of the other offers.
