stupidly, a year and a half ago i received a dui-misdemeanor as a result of a police checkpoint. obviously i've learned a hard lesson in a very sobering way but at this point in my life i'm just trying to move on and better myself and my career.

my question to anyone that might know, is how a program might view someone with a misdemeanor on their record? i know there are a whole host of variables that also come into play regarding my application but most of those (i.e. gmat score, essays, extracurricular) i can control myself. i have no control over past events and i can only be up front and honest regarding this mark against my record.

Maybe spin this into a 'Failure / error' essay and talk about what you learned from it!

i can see that, sure. and i think if given the opportunity to discuss/explain what i've learned from the experience, i'd like to think that i could show that i'm not letting this one mistake derail my purpose in life.

the thing is though, i'm wondering moreso about how this might prevent me from even gaining an audience.

A lot depends on how you discuss it in your application. To be honest though, the fact that it was only a year and a half ago is going to make things harder for you (more leeway is given to things done well in the past, especially if you have a clean record since then). While I don't think it's going to be an automatic disqualifier, your other aspects of the application are going to have to be that much better for the adcom to justify admitting you over someone with a more clean record.
