Basically my question regarding HBS is whether the 109 is a requirement or a recommendation.

Noboru,
at Harvard they discourage from applying with a TOEFL score below 109. Which means it's a requirement

My plan is therefore to apply with a 106 in first round to several top schools, then repeat the TOEFL, and apply to HBS in second round.

Does anyone have any thoughts regarding which round is more competitive in HBS?

Many thanks.

Most of the universities have the minimum of 100 for their TOEFL requirements. There are only some universities like Harvard that ask for 109 and higher. So 106 is an acceptable score for most universities.

I got 108 and sent an email to HBS.
They told me I could still apply and that it is just a guideline not a cut-off score!!!
So if you have a good verbal score on the GMAT and you point out your usage of English at work ... it could work!!!

Otherwise just retake it and I am sure you will gain at least 5 points (I got 101 on my first attempt) ;)
