Question on social networking

Hello All:

I think this is a very dumb/stupid question but I have to ask --

Will B-schools look at our accounts in Facebook or Twitter - i mean, I read some articles where the students said, they were contacted by schools through their facebook acoounts. I would think these were second tier or third tier schools, but my question is, does having or not having an account carry any weight and if we hav an account, is it required to clean the posts?

The whole application process is making me very tensed. I am reading others blogs and for the last 1 month, i have spent so much time on writing, editing and finally deleting the essays that I am very close to :cry:

i would err on the side of caution and remove any "questionable" pics or posts. it's good practice for post mba life anyway, and you can bet that even if adcom don't check facebook, recruiters will.

you'll quickly learn that things like facebook, twitter, linked in, etc. all contribute to your online presence and more importantly to your "brand". i wouldn't say delete your facebook or whatever... just make sure that whatever people see is representative of who you really are as a professional.

I doubt it's standard for all carry out online check for all candidates. That said, if you're applying for multiple schools and multiple people within each school are reviewing your folder it's likely that somebody will google you at some point out of curiosity. Particularly if you make reference to interesting organisations/people/events within your application. If i was in their position, it'd make sense to check the public record every so often to corroborate claims and clarify understanding.

As shadowsjc said, I'd only cleanse your profile to the event that there is anything seriously embarassing or contrary to what you say in your application. Don't think a few photos of you having beers on a night out is going to do any damage

ok -- I have done that. I have done more than that. Out of caution, I removed my facebook account completely -- dont think that was a godd idea. I will be adding it again!

i know plenty of people who just went off it during the admissions process. personally i think if you have a good linked in profile, it is better than having a facebook page. of course, without a facebook page, what will you manage to do with all the free time? lol

I have changed my display name in facebook (include @s, .s, spaces, |s and whatnots.) and have put it into complete privacy mode too. I might be overreacting but would rather make it a little tough to find me online except on linked in ofcourse

. I suspect that the adcom would even have the time (or bother) to seach for the applicant online. But an alumni interviewer could. ( Well,i would if i were asked to interview someone :wink:

Get rid of it.

I wouldn't worry about b-schools caring that much.

A future employer? Yeah.

It's a much bigger problem when you actually get into b-school and people take pictures of you that aren't all that flattering (even if you weren't behaving badly, they can still look that way).

Crank up the privacy settings, remove ANY questionable picture.
