Dear Friends,

I am Murthy from Chennai. I am a Mechanical Engineer with 8 years of work experience in assessing the automobile materials hazardous compliance. My field is very narrow and esp. in India it has got very limited opportunities. I would like to switch over my career to Finance by doing MBA. I am preparing for GMAT. Some of my friends told that, switching career after 8 years is difficult even if one does MBA. Is it correct? Does MBA not open gates for shifting of my career? Please advice. :?:

What opportunities are available to you will depend largely on what program you get into, but doing a full-time MBA program after 8 years does allow people to switch careers. I entered Kellogg after 8 years working in accounting and consulting, and got an internship and full-time job in marketing. Many of my classmates also have 8+ years experience and have successfully switched careers. So it is possible.

Hi Jerz,

Thanks for your reply. Some positive news..As per your comment, I understood that it is possible to switch career if I opt for a full time MBA depending on the courses I select. I have two options in mind, Finance and General Management. Can you please suggest me some good colleges which give good exposure on General Management and Finance and help me in shifting the career.

the good thing is that you can handle the math part much better than most business guys trying to change but keep in mind that your MBA should be finance focused if you really want to target that in your future career best of luck mate!

Hi
MBA after 8 years of experience can open gates to other careers. As you are interested in Finance, choose a college, which has a good Finance course.You can find a lot of guys in Gmatclub having 8+ experience and who have changed their careers.
