Hi All,
I am 30 years old and have pursued engineering from India.
I have 3.5 years of work experience and have a 4-year career break for civil services preparation( Indian Government jobs- police services ).
I am planning to apply for 2024 September for an MBA in the USA, and UK.
Please help me understand how to fill this gap and which option suits the best and why.1) Leave it ( keep it empty )
2) Replace with some social work
3) Replace with family business experience
4) Replace with Actual work experience.
Thank you for the help and interest in this.
Really appreciate your kind response.
Thank you
sharketza I have worked with many applicants who had major career breaks, and I would say there is no cookie-cutter approach to "addressing the career break." Every applicant has their own journey, and depending on the strength of the profile, we have to create a strategy on how to address the employment gap.
Your four-year break in studies is something that is not very understandable to a non-Indian evaluator. In any case, you should present this time as a period of learning and development. How you present an employment gap requires careful consideration. Even if you attribute the gap to an objective, you may have leveraged your skills outside your core area and received validation by making a positive impact on something while building self-confidence.
In your B-School applications, be honest about the reasons for the employment gap but also show how you have grown as a person during this time. The employment gap is traditionally a dreaded topic of conversation for job seekers and MBA applicants alike. But optimistically, the employment gap can also be seen as an opportunity to pursue passion projects or activities that give your life meaning. Expressing your belief in staying productive and learning new skills during the employment gap can have a positive impact on your applicant profile.
Although I will advise you to prioritize Indian B-schools as compared to a Tier 3 school abroad that may not have the brand recall if you ever have to change your geography. After all, with a long career gap due to UPSC preparation, you want to me more conscientious about the career decisions you now make.
