I am working on my essay and I wanted to use a Hindi word in my essay to describe something asked in the essay . I'll be explaining the relevancy of the word too.
It would be difficult to replace it with one singular word in English and while I can explain it with a combination the Hindi word captures it best.
do you think I should do it? would it have any negative mpact on my application
Hello tanyamamgain,

This isn't a conventional way of proceeding; however, logically speaking, we see no harm in this approach, if it is just a singular word and you explain the context of it.

All the best!

Yes, you can definitely use a Hindi word in your essay, especially if it expresses something that doesn't translate well into English. Just make sure to explain the word clearly and show how it's relevant to your story or the essay prompt. As long as it adds depth and meaning, it won’t hurt your application—in fact, it can make your essay more personal and memorable. Just avoid using too many non-English words, and you'll be fine!

I guess it really depends on the admissions committee, but personally I’d lean toward using only English in the essay to avoid any possible confusion or misunderstanding. At the same time, explaining a foreign word (with context) could show depth — as long as it’s clear to someone who doesn’t know the language.
