Another Computer Question

Question

Another question for the hardware gurus. I need to get an external keyboard and mouse for my laptop, basically want to have a set-up at my desk at home so I'm not hunched over a little laptop.

Any reason I shouldn't just go with the cheapest keyboard and mouse I can find? Any website recommendations for this stuff?

Well, some cheap keyboards suck. Some are really springy and hard to type on, and some have poor feel so you don't always know if your keypress has been registered. The thing is, it's all a matter of personal feel and preference. Some people like really flat keybaords, some like ergonimically shaped ones, some like stiff keys with a positive click, some like a light touch. Some keyboards have multimedia keys, which can be great if you use that sort of thing. If you type fast and type a lot, a good keyboard can make a big difference; if you hunt and peck, then it probably won't matter much. I think the best way is to run over to Best Buy or Circuit City or something and try them out; then order online.

Mouse feel can be the same. Some are really precise, while others less so. Some are specially shaped, which is great if it fits your hand but could give you cramps if it doesn't. Again, it's really a matter of personal feel.

An arguably over-simplified suggestion: Buy Logitech or Microsoft keyboard / mouse. Those are usually good .. and a lot of them aren't too costly either.

get a wireless desktop set so you don't have all kinds of wires coming out of your laptop, just a little USB dongle.

I just picked up a MS Wireless Laser Desktop 7000. It takes a little getting used to, but I'm loving it! if you want a more traditional keyboard, go for the 6000.

The best keyboard that I ever owned came packaged with my father's first IBM 8088 in 1984, it was built like a tank and had great typing charictaristics. These days, I have been using cheaper models.
