In an attempt to survive my final days at work, I am trying to get excited about my upcoming b-school experience. This thread is meant to be a discussion of the best class you have already taken in b-school, or if you haven't started yet, what class you are most looking forward to. It could be especially helpful to those of us preparing to start b-school as it could give us an idea of what types of classes we will decide to take!

I'll start out with mine:
Game Theory (Competitive Strategy). Honestly, this sort of thing is what really interests me about getting an MBA. I don't actually know if Foster has this exact class, but the ideas should be scattered throughout the curriculum. I would love to make my career out of making decisions in this area.

Really tricky question. I mean, I have Damodaran this semester, and the guy is something very special. But personally, in a complete divergence to my career, background and strengths, I have really enjoyed Managing Organizations (Corporate internal strategy) and Marketing. And Operations. And am really excited about spreading my wings next semester to the classes I want to study, rather than need to.

To somewhat echo 3underscore, there's usually a tension in between best professor and most interesting class. In my case, I have particularly enjoyed Finance 1 and Entrepreneurial Manager because of its professors but have been most interested in the material covered in Business, Government and the International Economy. The above doesn't mean that the professor of the latter is bad, it's that the other guys are such superstars that it's almost impossible not to love their classes.

having already done an MBA I am looking forward to a couple of classes very eagerly. I believe that strategic management accounting (if there is that course at Foster) will be very interesting. I am also looking forward to courses with an international focus because these are courses I could not do in my earlier MBA. Particularly I am looking forward to courses like International markets, International Business Economics etc....

Biodesign Innovation

Hearing about this course at an admissions presentation played a huge role in getting me excited about Stanford in the first place. It lines up exactly with what I want to do. And more importantly, everyone I've spoken with who's taken the course loved it. There are a fair number of medical device startups that have arisen directly out of projects undertaken in this class.

Stanford has amazing offerings in the bio/medical-devices area. One of my friends who went to Stan to do his MS in Mech Engg, ended up taking a lot of classes in bio-med area. He was so enthralled by the whole thing that he ended up as a cancer researcher and device development professional. He now works for Boston Scientific.

I am sure someone from your background will really enjoy the Stanford experience.

I think I have an odd group:

Leadership, Ethics and Organizations (shocking, I know)
Strategy
Operations

The professors are mostly very good, but a couple do it in such a way that is truly admirable: Strategy & Mktg Core. Perspectives normally only stay for the first hour of the class, but would often stay for the entire session when visiting these two.

aaudetat- those are the same classes I think I would enjoy once I enter a MBA program. I am in the fashion industry (brand management) and I find the operations and organizing aspect very interesting. It will be interesting to see where you end up after the program. At this point I am not sure where I want to be after, but I am excited about all the options available.

Game theory is interesting and really useful in business, but my experience in business school was disappointing. We covered it last quarter in Competitive Strategy and the concepts were very clear. The problem is that you never know the exact payoff of each state in real life. You'll probably have to take a class or two to really learn how to get clean and useful inputs. Just my take...

My favorite class is actually Taxes and Business Strategy. A few alumni I've spoken have saved a few million on M&A deals because of what they learned in this class. It's really valuable for my industry and is a lot of fun to learn, despite how strange it sounds. Learning how to make a lot of money is always fun though.
