USC MBA worht it?

Question

I am trying to do a JD/MBA program and been accepted to couple of different law school and i want to see which one school would offer me the best combined program. USC is one of them and i know the law program is good and worthwhile , now i want to get some feed back about the mba program. I appreciate well informed posts.

one main thing for me to figure out is: if USC MBA worth the time and money that i will invest in it?

I have done research on both MBA and JD degrees in the USA and USC MBA is just as good as USC JD in relative terms. They are both ranked top 20 in the USA and regarded with similar level of recognition and prestige. But then again, why do u want to do the double degree? What are your post-MBA/JD goals? Look at USC's career placement record and figure out whether the school can take you where you want to be.

Considering how tough the market is for lawyers, the USC MBA is probably worth more than its JD.

I went to Marshall for undergrad and had an amazing time. Its a great program and one that is very reputable on the West Coast. The same is true for the MBA program. But again, this is true for the West Coast and, especially, within California. Once you venture East, USC and Marshall are less known (I still don't understand why although we are ranked quite well nationally...I think USC doesn't market itself outside of California/Asia as well as it could...plus, USC alum tend to stay in California or NYC within the US...after all, why would anyone want to leave California??

). In terms of whether or not an MBA would help...it depends, what kind of law do you want to go into? If its securities law or something related to finance, then I think an MBA is useful and something that can make you stand out. But the next big question to consider is WHERE do you want to work? Again, if its California, Marshall is quite prestigious there and I would say go for it and don't look back. If its on the East Coast, however, you might be better off considering UCLA just because the brand recognition is better. Top 20 law school isn't the same as a top 20 business school. A top 20 law school, in my opinion, carries more weight than a top 20 business school. But again, thats just my opinion and based on my personal experiences with friends. Best of luck.

I will stay in LA and want to work in LA... And if a school could provide me with a recognized brand in LA it would be good enough... 
Furthermore I would like to get into corporate law and securities so I think MBA would be a useful thing to have....

If you're going to stay in LA for sure, USC/Marshall is a great brand and probably even more valuable than some other higher-ranked schools outside of CA. They have a huge, loyal SoCal network.

that is what i heard as well. for some reason it seems like that USC ingrains their alumnus with a great sense of community and helping fellow USC grads...

I myself attended UCLA, and there is not much sense of community in b/w people i know. I hope that the rumors are true about USC and it is not just a case of "grass is greener on the other side"...lol
