I’ve recently started on my path to B-School and was hoping to get some insight from the more experienced members of the forum.
Profile:
27/Male/Caucasian/Washington DC (American)
Academics:
680-720 on practice GMATs (hopefully I can go a bit higher with some study)
Undergrad GPA 3.56 in Politics (Brandeis/Harvard), Masters in Economics with Merit from LSE
Experience:
4 years as a diplomat at the U.S. State Department (matriculating with 5 years experience) -- received various awards, commendations; traveled to 30+ countries; learned French
Volunteer for a local non-profit
Goal:
Career change from international diplomacy to international business.
Target Schools:
Columbia
NYU
Dartmouth
Chicago
Key questions:
How much does my age matter? I’m thinking of applying this year (matriculating at 28) or next year (matriculating at 29).
Do B-schools care about graduate education? How should I explain why I want to pursue another degree?
What are the best US-based B-schools for international business?

Graduate school matters less when it comes to its grades, mainly because of the grade inflation at most colleges for graduate studies. Your undergrad GPA is great (so's your college!). Aim for a 700+ and you'll be in really good shape. Matriculating at 28 or 29 won't matter too much, but my suggestion is to go in at 28. At 29, you'll be the older half of the population, which is fine, but just in the unlikely event of you not gaining admission, you'd be 30 at matriculation should you reapply. For international business, depending on exactly what you wish to do, but most top b-schools can get you there. Wharton, Columbia, Michigan are all good choices. An often-not-mentioned contender for international business also includes Thunderbird, which has consistently been ranked top of top in international business. But if you choose to only attend top schools, any of the ones on your list would do the trick.

There seems no reason why you can not target the business schools that you mentioned. You have a good profile and the make or break point will be how well you can execute your application.
You will find a lot of masters and PhDs in the business schools. They made it , why can not you!? There is nothing wrong in pursuing another masters degree but it should make sense. It should work with the career story and goals that you want the adcom to know and believe. Same thing with age. There is no wrong age as long as you can tell why MBA at this point of your career/life makes sense.
