Hi,
I hope you can evaluate my profile and assess my chances of getting into a top MBA course.
- It would be great if you can provide a realistic evaluation of my chances for the schools below.
I am thinking about applying to the B schools as below (basically top European business schools) :
1. Oxford Said
2. Cambridge Judge
3. Insead
4. LBS
5. IMD
6. IE
7. US Schools (Kellogg, Duke, MIT, Chicago)
I have a GMAT score of 720 but very low GPA (Third class honours from a top UK university. This equates to around 2.4 GPA).
- Please note that I will not be making an alternative transcript. I would prefer to learn an extra language instead of this.
I have six years work experience from a leading consumer electronics manufacturer (revenue of around 7 billion USD).
I work as European strategy and planning manager where my major achievements are as follows :
Developed and implemented market strategies for the European region and key subsidiaries by identifying key segments and value propositions, and defining core performance factors. Managed project teams that implemented strategies to raise subsidiary channel management performance and embed sustainable key account development capabilities. Led key analyses to deliver top management business insights and recommendations on critical issues.
• Managed projects teams from sales, marketing and finance groups
• Developed regional channel management strategy and execution plans
• Conducted DCF and valuation analyses on core Pan-European retail accounts
• Designed key business processes to raise salesforce efficiency and decision-making capabilities
• Supported Regional Business Unit in defining pricing guidelines by drafting price requirements and policy; presented in quarterly regional subsidiary president meeting.
• Advised on process requirements for implementation of new regional supply-chain reporting tool.
Languages spoken: Native (English, Korean), Advanced (Spanish)
Extra curricular activities: Sunday league football team member, Saturday charity work in a charity shop

from an ethnicity standpoint, are you British, but Korean in descent (since I see the languages). For US business schools, there are going to be a good number of Korean Americans and Korean nationals (though probably not quite as many as the Indian men and Chinese women), but it would be interesting to play up being a British citizen of Korean descent if you are that is, because as an American, the only Korean people I know are either nationals, Korean Americans, and some Korean Russians.
I don't think you necessarily have to get your GPA converted, etc, but you need to explain that in an essay.
For the US business schools, a 2.4 ish GPA is well below the 10th percentile of incoming students. So was there an upward trend while you were in school? You should explain.
I think the work experience is great and puts you in good position for the US schools. Still, with the low GPA, your GMAT should be above the median to "compensate" for it.

European schools are known to weight GPA less heavily than American schools do. In the European admit thread I routinely see applicants in the 2's get into oxford/Cambridge and one lucky fellow with a 1.9 gpa got into Insead. Your work experience is solid and I think you have an excellent shot at Insead, Oxford and Cambridge irrespective of GPA. (Helps that your GMAT is ~30 points above average for Oxford and Cambridge).
LBS follows a more Western style to admit weighting and tend to have higher GPAs.
Good luck and enjoy writing out the really really long essay prompts from Oxford and Cambridge applications
