Greetings!
I am a MBA aspirant from Hyderabad.
I am very much keen to prepare and get selected for MBA in B school.
At the same time I am a bit confused too with reference to my academic profile, professional experience, work area, age and extracurricular activities which are required to get admission in top B schools.
Please find below my detailed profile and request you to evaluate at your end.
Education and Certification:
1) 10th - C.B.S.E - 73% in 2001.
2) 12th - C.B.S.E - 71% in 2003
3) B.Pharm - 68.7% in 2008 (1 year drop after 12th to prepare for PMT)
4) M.Pharm - 76.17% in 2010
5) Post Graduate Diploma certification in Pharma Regulatory Affairs - 60.7% in 2010
6) PMP certification - PMI, USA - April 2016.
Internship
Internship at - Indian Pharmaceutical mid sized company - 5 months duration in 2010 during M.Pharm course.
Here I have learnt a general overview of Pharmaceutical industry with special focus on R&D department. I worked on a project related to Pharmaceutical Generic Product Development where I got insight of phases of product development.
Work Experience
1) One of the best Pharmaceutical company in world - February 2011 - January 2013.(India)
Worked as Associate Scientist in Product Development.
- Got exposed to various aspects and procedures of pharma industry right from product/project selection, introduction, development, technology transfer, regulatory submission and commercialization of the same upon agency approval.
- Worked closely with international colleagues for smooth execution and technology transfer of the product.
- Applied different Quality tools and Quality by Design approach in the product development.
2) Another Pharma giant - February 2013 -till date
Working as a Scientist in Product development with focus on Project Management activities (Applying my project management skills gained through PMP certification).
Got involved and managed different stakeholders of the project for the smooth and timely completion of project as per agreed scope.
Extracurricular Activities
Not much
- Event management of annual function at college level.
- Participated in different sports like cricket and athlete in school
- Class leader and House captain during schooling.
- Having interest to serve at NGOs for some good cause like Environment protection and Orphanage education and facilities. But only few times I have visited orphanages for donation.
This is all from extracurricular part which i know a area where I am lagging behind.
Note - Current age - 30 years and married.
Why MBA
Post MBA i would like to continue to serve in the same industry i.e. Pharma/Healthcare field.
But I would like to shift my career from technical to Business role like - Strategy/Portfolio/Business/Operations management.
I think my overall experience in R&D till date (Technical as well as Project management experience) will give me an edge over others.
Questions/Queries
1) What is your opinion about my present profile w.r.t. getting into a Top B school.
2) Is it the right time to prepare for GMAT or is it too late for me.
3) As per my targeted industry (Pharma/Healthcare/FMCG), which B school i should pick.(My personal choice is ISB, Hyderabad: Is it a right choice. Also suggest few more)
4) As mentioned about my extracurricular activities which is not so impressive. So, what steps should i take to improve my overall profile which is desired in Top B schools.

Hi Deepak,
I quite like your choice of b-school - ISB is great for pharma/ healthcare and gets a lot of companies on campus - both product based and services (e-Commerce and brick-and-mortar). So you will have many options and these companies also take for varied roles- marketing and sales, product management/development, leadership development program to name some. FMCG is a different industry so I would not club it with the other two.
If you are serious about applying this year, you should start preparing for GMAT immediately. Its already a little late in the process as the b-schools have deadlines starting September. You will need atleast two months' study before you take the GMAT, so assuming you are able to crack the GMAT (700+ score) in two months, you could still make it to a couple of R1 deadlines. This will need extreme discipline and simultaneous work on the applications/reasearch about b-schools.
It is difficult for 30+ applicants to get into business schools. Since you want to grow within the same industry, look for the one year MBA programs, which are accelerated courses and do not offer a summer internship, which is oftentimes needed to make a career switch. the Indian IIM executive programs are very good as well.
With application writing and GMAT on your plate and a job, I don't see enough time left for doing extra curricular activities at this stage. Moreover, it's likely to sound too last minute, so I'd suggest you concentrate on the other aspects of your profile for now, and play upto your existing strengths in the application.
