RC: Quality or Quantity?

Question

Hi there,

I'm currently prepping for RC and find that I have very inconsistent results. Some passages I can understand just fine and have more than enough time left. Others, I barely understand the gist and have to re-read and run out of time.

So my question is: Should I explore the ones I failed more deeply by re-reading them and immersing myself in a specific passage (quality approach) or should I just continue and pound through as many passages as possible (quantity approach)?

Hi BlackHaggy,

You may be able to improve by focusing on quantity, but analysing the ones you found hard is probably the more efficient approach. You could also maintain a (simple) tracker to check for any patterns.

Hi  BlackHaggy ,

My suggestion would be to analyze the passages you found difficult more deeply to figure out where exactly is the challenge, before deciding on a quality vs. quantity approach on the surface.

For example, you might find certain genre of passages particularly challenging, because the topic/vocabulary is not familiar to you. Then you can focus on that genre by doing more practice.

Or, you might find longer passages present more challenge, because of complex sentence structure, etc. Then you can work on that.

Or, maybe you find your error rate is higher for certain question type, then you need to adjust/finetune your reading method to address the issue.

All this is to say, find out the root cause(s) for your errors and then decide on the practice approach to address the root cause(s).
