The rhododendrons that dominate Himalayan hillsides are in some places blooming forty-five days ahead of schedule, wrecking the annual spring flower festival and creating confusion among folk artists. The same kind of confusion is gripping mountaineers; one experienced high-altitude guide recently reported abandoning mountains he had climbed for years because of the melting of the ice that acts as a glue, literally holding the mountains together.
It’s not just the Himalayas. In 2018, researchers arriving in Bolivia found that the eighteen-thousand-year-old Chacaltaya Glacier is, in their words, “gone, completely melted away as of some sad, undetermined moment early this year.” Once the world’s highest ski run, it now is nothing but rocks and mud. But it’s not the loss of a ski run that really matters. These glaciers are reservoirs for entire continents, watering billions of people who have settled downstream precisely because the glaciers guaranteed a steady supply. “When the glaciers are gone, they are gone. What does a place like Lima do?” asked Tim Barnett, a climate scientist at Scripps Oceanographic Institute. In northwest China, there are 300 million people relying on snowmelt for water supply. There is no way to replace it until the next ice age.
When I read these accounts, I flash back to a tiny village, remote even by Tibetan standards, where I visited years ago. A young man guided me a mile up a riverbank for a view of the enormous glacier whose snout towered over the valley. A black rock the size of an apartment tower stuck out from the middle of the wall of ice. My guide said it had appeared only the year before and now grew larger daily as its dark surface absorbed the sun’s heat. We were a hundred miles from a school, far from the TV. So, I asked the young man: “Why is it melting?” I don’t know what I expected—some story about angry gods? He looked at me as if I was visiting from a different planet.
“Global warming,” he said. “Too much pollution.” No confusion there. We hiked back to his hut and shook hands. I climbed into the Land Cruiser exuding black smoke and rushed to the airplane. And so forth.
1. Besides the melting of ice and its associated impacts, which other impact of global warming is indicated in the passage?
A. Appearance of rocks
B. Destruction of ski runs
C. Postponed flowering of some woody plants

C. It indicates a paradox between global warming and our dependence on activities that perpetuate the phenomenon.
D. It indicates that the author cannot in any way resolve the issue of global warming that is so badly affecting the place.
E. It shows that vehicles, not factories, are primarily responsible for the adverse impact of warming in the region.
3. What is the function of the second paragraph in the passage as a whole?
A. It shows that global warming is producing adverse effects the world over.
B. It reminds the author of valuable time in a tiny village.
C. It provides strong reasons for the necessity of another ice age.
D. It asserts that glaciers are an indispensable source of usable water.

1. Besides the melting of ice and its associated impacts, which other impact of global warming is indicated in the passage?A. Appearance of rocks - this is the associated impact of melting of ice. Hence, wrong.
B. Destruction of ski runs - are we really speaking about destruction of ice. Or does the passage speak about the loss of ski, due to glacial melting. Hence, wrong.
C. Postponed flowering of some woody plants - postponed or early flowering of rhododendrons? The latter seems more correct than the former. Hence, wrong.
D. Shorter winter season - The initial paragraph speaks about rhododendrons flowering earlier in 45 days prior to season. So, the winter season is reduced by 45 days. Hence, we can infer it to be shorter than usual. Hence, correct answer.
E. Decrease in rainfall in mountains - The passage mentions snow melt or glacier melting and waters. Rainfall is not mentioned. Hence, wrong.
2. In the context of the passage, which of the following is true about the sentence “I climbed into the Land Cruiser exuding black smoke and rushed to the airplane” (see highlighted text)?A. It suggests that the author is now proceeding to explore more regions.
B. It suggests the author’s satisfied departure from the place after receiving an informed response.
C. It indicates a paradox between global warming and our dependence on activities that perpetuate the phenomenon.D. It indicates that the author cannot in any way resolve the issue of global warming that is so badly affecting the place.
E. It shows that vehicles, not factories, are primarily responsible for the adverse impact of warming in the region.
The last few lines mentioning black smoke from cruiser, then airplane and so forth. Indicates that even though the impact of global warming is being felt, the agents causing it cannot be removed from our daily lives.
3. What is the function of the second paragraph in the passage as a whole?A. It shows that global warming is producing adverse effects the world over.B. It reminds the author of valuable time in a tiny village.
C. It provides strong reasons for the necessity of another ice age.
D. It asserts that glaciers are an indispensable source of usable water.
E. It presents similarities among different mountainous regions.
The second para begins with :
It’s not just the Himalayas. And the global warming impact is felt in Bolivia, and finally across all continents having glaciers, where the impact is felt across by all. So, option A is correct.
4. Which of the following best captures the author’s sentiment about his question “Why is it melting?” to the young man?
The question asks about the sentiment of the author, while raising why is it melting ? To the young man.
I have neglected options B and C from the equation. So, we are left with A, D and E.
To reach a conclusion, we need to look at the earlier sentences. “ We were a hundred miles from a school, far from the TV”. This makes it clear why the question was asked at the first instance. Not about the sentiment. So, option E is also removed.
Now to the final two A and D. Post asking the question , the author thinks what can I expect - some story about angry gods! He s looking at me as if I came from a different planet. These are issues which are happening currently and I don’t think you can answer it, except providing a better story to support your view.
This shows his intellectual arrogance and supremacy. Hence, Conceit is correct answer.
The answer is not rhetoric. If it has been rhetoric , then the answer from the guide should had been no. And the author explaining it.
A. Conceit
B. Superstition
C. Religiosity
D. Rhetoric
E. Lack of knowledge.
5. The passage provides support for which of the following statements?
A. Modernization has its cons.
B. Nature’s gifts and industrialization’s gifts cannot coexist.
C. Mountaineers are likely to be more conscious of the effects of global warming.
D. The next ice age will solve the global warming problem.
E. Hiking is increasingly replacing skiing.
Narrowing down, I was stuck with two options A and C.
Then, why A ? First para clearly mentions that the rhododendron flowering before season has left the mountaineers in shock, disbelieve and confusion. If that’s the case, how can they be more conscious on the effects of global warming. Hence, wrong.
so, Correct answer is A. Last paragraph mentions the effects of modernisation and its impacts, which was clearly defined in the earlier three paragraphs.
