Although I can’t make out, what exactly the text tries to make out, I can say for sure tht D is a dubious choice, since it changes the meaning of the text by saying that the silicon valley club itself was the source of the calamity.
I would rather prefer B and C because they categorically state that relief came from an unexpected source; the construction is also satisfying with the subject remaining close to its verb. Beyond that, I am unable to make up. I would like to push a behind on this score, with the subject and verb being far placed from each other, though it is not a critical factor I almost thought E was a fragment with the verb missing, until I scanned through to locate it at the end of the sentence.
All in all, an ungmattish question
