Good question.. thanks for the detailed explanation.. can you cite some more examples which are singular like "the board of directors"

Some more examples I could think of -

Group of ministers/employees/students...bunch of things...and so on
Also Class, Committee, Team, Company, Family, Union, Army, Department, Jury, Club, Society...and so on
Also - pack of wolves, colony of ants!..etc :)
