The critical difference between B and D is the use of proper idiom, as risky as; as per grammar, comparison started with as should be completed with as. So B loses out to D

Because of rising corn prices, investment in ethanol as an alternative energy is so risky, and for some investors even riskier than what hydrogen fuel cells are predicted to be

I chosen 'B' because of below reason
investment in ethanol AS...........SO....investment in hydrogen fuel cells

whats wrong in above construction ? :?

The "as" in "ethanol as an alternative energy" is used to describe ethanol. It is not part of the "as...so..." construction.

btw, will this type of questions be on the GMAT? Since they have supposedly tone down on questions on idioms?

A) so risky, and for some investors even riskier than what hydrogen fuel cells are predicted to be--no logical meaning

B) so risky, and for some investors even riskier than, investment in hydrogen fuel cells--should be "as risky as"

C) as risky, and for some investors even riskier than, hydrogen fuel cells---distorts the meaning and no proper idiom

D) as risky as, and for some investors even riskier than, investment in hydrogen fuel cells--correct

E) as risky as, and for some investors even riskier than, hydrogen fuel cells--distorts the meaning
