I like your approach. I noticed you here on the board as one of the most brilliant student :)

However, your answer is incorrect and you picked the most tricky answer among the answer choices ;)

I see...

Students of the St Hopkins school were able to collect, over a period of three years, a substantial amount of money in donations, which in some cases amounted to as many as $1000 per student every year.

"Which" refers to donations, not to the "amount of money". It is hard to pick an answer... I think that I am right in excluding "much" , dollars is countable so "many" is required. Between B and C I choose B: more clear and concise.
Would you agree with me that (even if it is correct) B is wordy? "annually" and "every year"

yup. You perfectly spot that B is wordy due to its redundancy. This is a tough question. On upper level questions, in my personal experience, if you do not understand clearly the meaning of the sentence, grammar rules help you until certain point, no further

I picked A.

No redundancy and "much" is the correct usage, because I think of $1000 as a quantity or a sum of dollar, not as 1000 individual dollars.

Official Answer (OA) – A
Concepts Tested – Meaning, Redundancy, Wordiness
This question gives you a choice between ‘much’ and ‘many’. Although ‘many’
seems to be the obvious choice, it is actually ‘much’ that is correct because it is
actually the amount of money that is as much as $1000. Thus A is the best
answer

B and C - The use of ‘many’ is incorrect. Also the use of ‘annually’ and ‘every
year’ together is redundant

D - The use of ‘annually’ and ‘every year’ together is redundant

E - The use of ‘many’ is incorrect. Also the sentence is unnecessarily wordy

Probably the slip lies in taking $1000 as a countable noun and tagging it with as many as; sorry! $1000 is a quantum in this case and hence non-countable like we say $5000 is too small for renting a place in Manhattan. Hence we are required to ignore all choices that describe the figure with ‘as many as’. ‘BCE are out in one jump. The redundant phrases ‘annually and every year’ are extra ammunition to shoot down in BCD. With BCDE gone, what weare left with is just A, staying off the redundancy and countability pitfalls.

(A) in some cases as much as $1000 per student every year.
(B) in some cases as many as $1000 annually per student every year.
(C) annually collecting as many as $1000 per student every year, in some cases.
(D) collecting annually in some cases as much as $1000 per student every year.
(E) which in some cases amounted to as many as $1000 per student every year.

Since we are talking about dollars, many is correct: out A and D.
B and C are wordy: they repeat "every year" and "annualy".
IMO E

Hello Dear,

Your reasoning is wrong. E is incorrect because it is voids the logical meaning of sentence
