It is not E, because in E, "due to fallen grain prices" , the word "fallen" signifies a "completed process", that is, the price have already fallen.
What we need here is a word that signifies that price were keep falling - gradually. Thus, answer D is the correct one.

It is matter of past, price were fallen and because of those fallen price families faced economic hardship..
then why not e ??
