As written, the sentence suggests that the embarrassments were an adolescent, not that the adults suffered embarrassments when they were adolescents, which is the meaning required here. Eliminate (A), (B) and (E) on this basis.

Hi,
I worked on it using POE. As per meaning of this sentence, Something happened in the past affects people till now.
In first and 2nd sentence use of happening is wrong. As embarrassment happened before, It is not happening right now. So A and B rejected.
In 3rd sentence use of as is wrong. we are talking about a situation so when is appropriate here.
4th option Correct Answer. It describe the situation of the past and they clearly qualifies the well-adjusted adults.
In 5th sentence when adolescents is not clear,adolescent refer to whoom.

For Option E : that had happened when adolescents
Moreover, the use of the past perfect is WRONG; In GMATLand, we use the past perfect only when we have two events that occured in the past and we have to show that an event occured before the other in time sequence. In this option, we don't need the past perfect at all ..
