The reason why I crossed off A, C, D is that it clearly doesn't have any antecedent. Not sure if one can do this straight away, especially if the subject becomes clear later in the sentence?
Anyhow, in B, this time "that alternative" doesn't have antecedent. What is the alternative?
So I'll go with E, though I'm not sure whether one can say "to increase the revenues above today?"

A,C,D can be directly eliminated. [Usage of "IT" is wrong]
I chose "B".
"E" states that "Wont generate revenue ABOVE TODAY". "Above today" looks redundant to me.
Regarding "B" - "Failing to update the software" is a Gerund Phrase. A Gerund phrase always functions as a NOUN.
and here "THAT" acts as a relative pronoun. "That" Refers to the noun "Failing to update the software"
"failing to update the software that make that alternative more costly." Hence it conveys tat if the bankers failed to update the software it will cost them.
The above is my reasoning. If anything wrong in that kindly clarify. Thanks..
